The foremost criterion for selection of companies in CTO Black Book 2009 is that the company should mainly operate in the IT services and hardware segment. IT services include application development & maintenance, packaged software, IT Consulting, IT infrastructure management, and software product development. The hardware segment covers companies that operate in networking equipment, IT support & network consulting, hardware segment are also included in our study. Companies purely trading in hardware & software products and pure ITeS-BPO companies have been excluded for the study. However, companies which are mainly into software or hardware, and also have an associated BPO or IT trading operation have been included. The initial selection of the company data set was based on the list compiled from various sources, including the D&B internal database, listed companies and IT industry associations especially NASSCOM and MAIT. Additionally, mass media channels such as advertisements in leading news dailies were used to invite participation in the publication. The companies short-listed were then sent a detailed questionnaire seeking basic information on the company. We have profiled companies that are listed on either BSE or NSE having a total income of equal to or above of Rs 100 million for companies fiscal year ending between Sep 2008 to June 2009 on standalone basis. Further, companies which have responded to our questionnaire and have met our selection criteria also been considered in the publication. Companies with negative net worth and those declared financially sick by the Board of Industrial & Financial Reconstruction (BIFR), as available on BIFR website, have been excluded. Further, we have also excluded listed companies that are part of the BSE Z group of companies as on Mar 31, 2010. The companies that have reported net losses for the last three consecutive financial years were also excluded from the publication. The information contained in this publication is sourced and compiled from questionnaires circulated, telephonic interviews, and company authenticated information available in the public domain, such as company annual reports, company websites, the Registrar of Companies and BSE. Every effort was made to ensure that companies respond to the questionnaire. However, in the eventuality that a company did not respond with required information, and/or information which is not available in public domain, it has been excluded from our publication. This is to ensure that all information contained in this publication is verified and authenticated. The companies profiled in this publication have been listed on various parameters, viz., total income, net profit, net worth, industry verticals, and services offered. However, this listing is not exhaustive, due to exclusion of those companies that have not responded to the request for information. The Total Income, Net Profit and Net Worth figures for companies are as per standalone financials sourced from annual reports for the financial year 2008-09. Total income is a sum of revenue and other income, where the revenue is net of excise duties, sales tax, inter-unit transfers and other government levies. Interest and subsidies are added to the Total Income. Net profit is profit after tax excluding impact of prior-period, exceptional and extraordinary items. Tax includes all provisions required and any other tax adjustment specifically mentioned. Net worth is the sum of share capital and reserves & surplus, deducting debit balance appearing in the profit and loss account, revaluation reserves, miscellaneous expenditure, and intangibles such as patents, goodwill, trademarks, copyrights, know-how, brands, licenses, rights, computer software and the likes. Those companies whose financial statements have been qualified and quantified by auditors are marked with an asterisk (**) while unquantified qualification are marked with (*) in this publication. The qualifications quantified by auditors have been considered while calculating the financial figures. A standardized format has been used for reporting the information on the companies. Dun & Bradstreet has compiled the management details of companies from the data provided directly by the company, or from annual reports, BSE announcement or as per details provided on the company website as on April 2010. The research team would appreciate if readers would keep Dun & Bradstreet regularly updated regarding any changes in their companies, as and when it occurs. Each company featured in the publication has been allotted its unique identification number (D-U-N-S ® - Data Universal Numbering System). This will help readers locate and obtain full-fledged information reports on these companies from the Dun & Bradstreet database. The research team is confident that the first edition of ‘CTO Black Book 2009’ will prove useful. We would be pleased to receive your invaluable feedback and suggestions, which we can incorporate in the next edition. Your satisfaction remains our goal in Dun & Bradstreet’s journey towards excellence.
