Background

Tata Chemicals Ltd (Tata Chemicals) began operations as Okhamandal Salt Works in 1927 and was taken over by the Tatas in 1937. In 1939, the company was incorporated under its current name. In 1943, Tata Chemicals commenced production of caustic soda, liquid chlorine, bleaching powder & other chemicals and the following year commenced production of soda ash. In 2007, the company forayed into vegetables and fruits distribution business in partnership with Total Produce, Ireland. Tata Chemicals operates in two main businesses viz. Fertilisers and Chemicals.

Business Profile

Tata Chemicals' fertiliser segment includes crop nutrition and agri-business while inorganic chemicals segment include industrial chemicals and consumer products. Tata Chemicals' crop nutrition & agri business segment includes production of fertilisers like urea, DAP and SSP, among others. It provides agri inputs through its retail network - Tata Kisan Sasar and as on Mar 31, 2009 it operated around 600 retail outlets. The company has a JV which deals in distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables. In its inorganic chemicals segment the company produces soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, STPP, cement and consumer products like salt which is marketed under Tata Salt and I-Shakti brands.

It has an annual installed capacity of 440,000 MT of cement; 917,700 MT of soda ash; 70,000 MT of sodium bicarbonate and 742,500 MT of urea. During FY09, the fertiliser business contributed around 56% to the revenues of the company. As a part of its foray into bioduels segment, the company is setting up a bioethanol facility at Nanded in Maharashtra. During FY09, the company acquired stake in Singapore based JOil Pte Ltd, promoted by Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL), which is engaged in producing tissue culture seedlings of Jatropha. The company also has an exclusive arrangement for marketing of JOil's seedlings in India and East Africa.
