The initial set of companies screened for the inaugural edition of Dun & Bradstreet India’s (D&B India) publication, ‘Indian Retail Industry: Challenges, Opportunities and Outlook’, was compiled by using D&B India’s internal database. The database was, however, further supplemented with information gathered through various other sources like industry associations, government agencies, business directories and companies’ websites. The companies thus identified were contacted via direct mailers, telephone calls, faxes and emails. Besides, advertisements inviting participation in the publication were released in India’s leading newspapers.

Companies with more than two retail outlets or having a combined retail floor space of 1,000 sq. ft and above were considered. The shop-in-shop floor space and the shop-in-shop store count of companies were not considered, except for those companies that are operating in the jewellery segment. In the case of multiplexes, only companies operating with more than two screens were considered. The store & screen count and the combined floor space in the publication are as on December 2008.

Although utmost care has been taken to incorporate the latest figures, in some cases where companies failed to respond, we have sourced information on best effort basis from data available in public domain such as company websites, annual reports, quarterly and investor updates, company presentations and so on.

The information was collated for a specific time band of six months to ensure fair comparison of facts and figures, as many companies follow different year-ends for financial reporting. Accordingly, a disclaimer has been added wherever necessary.

A standardised reporting format has been applied for profiling companies in the publication. Companies that did not respond to the questionnaire or companies who did not have updated information have been excluded from the publication.

Each company featured in this publication has been allotted a D-U-N-S® number (Data Universal Numbering System), which is a unique identification number. This will help readers locate and obtain full fledged information on these companies from the D&B database.

The editorial team would appreciate if readers keep D&B India regularly updated regarding key developments in their companies as and when it occurs.

The editorial team is confident that ‘Indian Retail Industry: Challenges, Opportunities and Outlook’, will prove a useful source of information on the retail sector. We would be pleased to receive your valuable feedback and suggestions. Your satisfaction remains Dun & Bradstreet’s goal in its journey towards excellence.
