Background

Tata Telecommunications Ltd (Tata Communications) is part of Tata Group and was incorporated in 1986 as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd for the overseas communication services. The company was wholly owned by the Government of India. In 2002, Tata Group acquired a 45% stake in VSNL and in 2008, the company acquired its present name. Currently the company operates under the brand identity – Tata Communications. The company provides integrated voice communication services both in India and internationally to three consumer segments: wholesale, enterprise and retail segment.

Business Profile

Tata Communications operates under three main business segments viz. wholesale voice, enterprise & carrier data and other services. The company’s portfolio includes transmission, IP, converged voice, mobility, managed network connectivity, hosted data center, communication solutions and business transformation services to global and Indian enterprises & service providers as well as, broadband and content services to Indian consumers. It also offers submarine cable networks, a Tier-1 IP network, and connectivity globally. For the second quarter ended Sept 09, the company received total income revenues of Rs. 7.59 bn from its telecommunication services. In FY09, the company handled 24.61 bn minutes of international voice traffic and 10.04 bn minutes national voice traffic and thereby registering a growth of 13% and 43% respectively. Tata Communications serves its customers from its offices in 80 cities in 40 countries worldwide. The company has a strategic investment in South African operator, Neotel, for providing services in South Africa. In FY10 Tata Communications has agreed to acquire British Telecom Group plc's (BT) Mosaic business to manage content and workflow from production to distribution across collaborative market ecosystems. In the same period, the company also signed a partnership deal with Auckland-based Tomizone to usher in a Wi-Fi revolution in India.
