Background

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) was formed in 1928 as an alliance between Asiatic Petroleum (India) and Burmah Oil Company. In 1952, the company was incorporated as Burmah Shell Refineries Ltd. In 1976, GoI took over the Burmah Shell Group of companies to form Bharat Refineries Ltd and in the following year renamed it as BPCL. In Oct 2006, it set up a wholly owned subsidiary Bharat PetroResources Ltd to focus into E&P of hydro carbon blocks. BPCL is in the business of manufacturing and marketing petroleum products.

Business Profile


BPCL’s business operations include refining, retail, LPG, lubricants, industrial & commercial. The company operates two refineries; one each at Mumbai, Maharashtra and Kochi, Kerala. For FY09, the refineries achieved crude oil throughput of around 20 MMTPA. The company is engaged in the retailing of diesel, kerosene; branded petrol under the name of Speed and supplies LPG under the brand of Bharatgas. Its lubricant products include automotive engine oils, gear oils, transmission oils, specialty oils and greases under the brand - Mak. BPCL also provides industrial fuels and solvents such as KO, LDO, naphtha, LSHS and FO. As on Mar 31, 2009, the company operated 23 aviation services stations; 8,402 retail outlets; 49 LPG bottling plants; and supplied LPG to around 26.6 mn households. During FY09, the company added 151 retail outlets to its distribution network.
