Dun & Bradstreet India is pleased to present to you a report titled ‘India’s Energy Sector’ under the ‘D&B Sectoral Round Table Conferences’ series. The publication aims to provide an analytical overview of the current trends and future prospects of the Energy sector, which is divided into two sub segments viz., Oil & Gas and Power.

India has emerged as one of the fast growing economies in the world, after having recorded an annual average growth rate of 8% during the last four years. The energy sector holds the key in accelerating India’s economic growth. The rapidly growing industrial base, urbanization, as well as improvement in the standard of living have widened the gap between energy demand and supply.

The Indian oil & gas industry constitutes around 15% of India’s GDP. While the Indian Petroleum Industry is one of the oldest in the world, India's crude oil and natural gas production has been stagnating in recent years. Demand, however, has been growing by more than 5% annually, owing to the strong growth of the Indian economy and rising population. The widening of the demandsupply gap has increased the dependency on imports. Presently, almost 75% of India’s crude oil requirements are met from imports. In the Power sector too, supply has not been able to keep pace with increasing demand, causing huge power shortages across the country. The overall energy deficit was 11% in FY09 while the peak-hour deficit touched 12%. The deficit is largely due to T&D losses, poor transmission and distribution infrastructure, unaccountability in metering and billing, cross subsidies, etc.

For sustained economic growth, long-term availability of adequate energy at affordable cost is crucial. Meeting the energy challenge is therefore of fundamental importance to India’s economic growth imperatives and its efforts to raise its level of human development.

The publication ‘India’s Energy Sector’ highlights the current status, issues and numerous development initiatives in various segments of the Energy industry.

I hope you enjoy reading this publication and look forward to receiving your suggestions.
