Background

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (Power Grid), a GoI enterprise was incorporated in 1989 as National Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. In 1992, the company took over the power transmission assets of Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd. During the same period, the company acquired its current name. In 1998, the company was formally notified as a CTU by the GoI. The company is involved in power transmission business.

Business Profile

Power Grid’s core business includes operating & developing transmission systems, grid management and rural electrification. The company offers consultancy services and is also diversified into telecommunication. The company owns & operates around 71,500 ckm of transmission lines along with 120 Sub-stations and transformation capacity of about 79,500 MVA. It has an inter-regional power transfer capacity of about 20,800 MW and maintains the transmission system availability at 99.55%. In telecom business, it owns and operates more than 20,000 Kms of telecom network connecting all metros, major cities & towns. During FY09, Power Grid added 4,642 ckm of transmission network, nine EHV AC sub-stations and added 6,400 MVA of transformational capacity. Some of the projects secured by the company in FY09 include - turnkey execution of power evacuation system for Talwandi Sabo and Rajpura Power Project in Punjab and execution of Pallatana- Silchar 400KV D/C and Silchar - Bongaigaon transmission lines. In FY09, the company was conferred with Navratna Status by the GoI.
