Background

The Tata Power Company Ltd (Tata Power), formerly known as Tata Electric was established in 1919. In 2000, Andhra Valley Power Supply Company Ltd and Tata Hydro-Electric Power Supply Company Ltd, other Tata Group companies, were merged with Tata Power. The company is involved in generation, transmission and distribution of power in the city of Mumbai and its suburbs.


Business Profile

Tata Power is engaged in electricity generation through various fuel sources including thermal, hydroelectric renewable energy and waste heat recovery. It operates with four thermal power stations based in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand and WB; three hydro generating stations located at Maharashtra; six wind farms across Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka and one transmission division located at Maharashtra. As of Mar 31, 2009, the company had an annual installed capacity to generate 2,785 MW of electricity. During FY09, the company generated 14,807 MUs of power from all its power plants. During the same period, the company added 2,366 customers and also commissioned 34 new customer sub-stations. Tata Power has about 1,100 ckt kms of transmission network in Mumbai, comprising 973 ckt kms of 220 kV/110 kV overhead-lines and 124 circuit kms of 220 kV/110 kV underground cables. During FY09, it signed an agreement with IOCL to establish a coal-based power plant in Orissa to meet the latter’s captive requirements. In Feb 2010, the company signed an MoU with Korea East West Power Company Ltd.
