Background

Torrent Power Limited (Torrent Power) part of Torrent Group, forayed into power sector in the year 1990 by acquiring and subsequently renaming Mahendra Electricals as Torrent Cables. In 2004-05, the three group companies namely; Torrent Power AEC, Torrent Power SEC and Torrent Power Generation Ltd were merged to form Torrent Power. The company is engaged in electricity generation and distribution.

Business Profile

Torrent Power engages in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. It has a coal based thermal power station at Sabarmati and a dual fuel based combined cycle power plant at Vatva, all situated in Gujarat. For FY09, the power generated by Sabarmati and Vatva power station stood at 3,373 MUs and 636 MUs respectively. The company has three distribution centers located at Ahmedabad, Surat and Bhiwandi all in Gujarat. During 2009, the Ahmedabad and Surat license area operations in Gujarat contributed about 82% of the company’s revenues. The company distributes electricity to approximately 1.97 mn to residential, commercial, LTP, LTMD, and HT consumers. In FY09, T&D losses in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat distribution circle stood at around 7% and the PLF of the power plants stood at 91%. During the same year, the company added 352 distribution transformers of 11 KV at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat. In FY09, the company signed a fuel supply agreement with South Eastern Coalfields Ltd.
