Pune MSME Scenario

Introduction

MSMEs in the Pune district play a pivotal role in driving the economic growth of the region. As of July 2012, Pune district had 27,683 MSMEs, out of which 21,763 were micro enterprises, 5,818 were small enterprises, and 102 were medium enterprises. Thus, the micro enterprises constitutes around 79% of the total MSME strength of Pune.

As of July 2012, MSMEs in Pune overall employed 148,098 people, with micro enterprises employing 59% of the total MSME employees and small enterprises were employing 33% of the total employees.

As of July 2012, the total investment in plant & machinery by MSMEs of Pune district has been recorded at ` 40.1 bn with over 90% of the investment in manufacturing sector and rest shared by the service sector.

Trend of units registered

The number of registered MSME units increased from 2,381 in FY07 to 2,835 in FY12, displaying a CAGR of 3.6% from FY07 to FY12. The investment of registered units also increased at a CAGR of 51.6% during the same period.

Potential opportunities in Pune

Pune offers high potential across wide range of industries. IT/ITeS and automobile industry are the most prevalent sectors in the Pune district. Apart from that, Pune district has a wide availability of agricultural resources and agro-based industry is one of the most prominent industries in the region.
