I am pleased to launch Dun & Bradstreet’s SME Awards 2008, dedicated to the small and medium enterprises across sectors in the country. The awards, accompanied by the publication Emerging SMEs of India 2008, are a tribute to those SME players that have emerged as leaders in their respective sectors. Dun & Bradstreet’s global footprint and market reach will ensure that this publication is established globally as the premier information resource on the Indian SME segment.

The Indian economy continues to grow at a rapid pace. The manufacturing sector has contributed significantly to the growth of real GDP, and SMEs have played a key role in this contribution. Globalisation has opened new opportunities for players of all size. Recent global developments such as the end of quota regime post MFA, India’s inclusion within Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) in the pharmaceutical sector, increasing outsourcing trends for auto and engineering components, software products & services, leather goods etc have redefined the dynamics of Indian industries. The presence of a vibrant manufacturing and service sector will ensure that SMEs will be able to capitalize on these new opportunities in the domestic as well as the international markets.

Globally, the SME segment has been an agent of change and growth in many countries, and is a major source of employment. SMEs are expected to play a significant role in the economic development of India, given that the entrepreneurial spirit of the nation has been given a fillip in the liberalised environment. The overall business climate has become conducive for SMEs to graduate not just from small and medium to large, but also from the national to global arena.

At Dun & Bradstreet, we shall continue to endeavour to meet your expectations from our publication. I look forward to receiving your feedback and suggestions.
