Dun & Bradstreet India is pleased to release the fourth edition of its premiere publication, ‘India’s Top PSUs 2011’. This issue marks another successful milestone in providing a ready reference tool on India Inc’s top public sector enterprises with valuable insights on their financial performance.

The 2011 edition continues with the customary approach of profiling India’s leading public sector enterprises. Companies are ranked on various criteria including total income, net profit and net worth among others. The publication includes an Insights section, which is primarily based on analysis of financial data pertaining to these public sector enterprises. In addition to the FY10 performance, the Insights section also includes information on the quarterly performance during the first three quarters of FY11. Collectively, these sections along with the profiles of the featured companies will help readers better understand the business dynamics of these PSUs.

The public sector has emerged as an important constituent of the Indian economy postindependence. It has played a significant role in the country’s overall economic development, as it is equipped to reduce imbalances and inequalities of income. In the post-liberalisation era, public sector enterprises continue to perform commendably. Today, these enterprises are growing in size and stature and competing with major players in domestic and international markets by focusing on business growth and diversification.

The public sector has played an important role in the country’s economic development. The public sector’s gross domestic savings as a percentage of GDP at current market prices went up from 0.5% in FY09 to 2.1% in FY10. Aggregate investments in public sector enterprises have been increasing over the years. Total investment, including equity plus long-term loans in central PSUs, increased from ` 5,135.3 bn in FY09 to ` 5,799.2 bn in FY10, registering a growth of 12.9%.

‘India’s Top PSUs 2011’ is an endeavour to capture the growth story of the Indian public sector and to make available useful information about these companies to a wide audience. We expect ‘India’s Top PSUs 2011’ to be a valuable resource for understanding public sector enterprises in India.
