Challenge

An established biofuel producer with an operating grain-based ethanol plant was evaluating entry into the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) market through the Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) pathway. As global aviation moves towards mandatory SAF adoption under ICAO's CORSIA framework and India advances its own SAF blending roadmap, the client needed a clear understanding of the technical, environmental, commercial, and regulatory viability of the opportunity.

Dun & Bradstreet India was engaged as the strategic advisor to undertake a comprehensive pre-feasibility assessment, integrating techno-economic, environmental, feedstock, policy, and market considerations into a unified decision framework.

The engagement included:

Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) & CORSIA Eligibility Review:Development of a lifecycle emissions framework covering ethanol production, supplementary alcohol feedstocks, ATJ conversion processes, and hydrogen usage scenarios to assess alignment with CORSIA sustainability requirements.

Feedstock Availability Assessment: Detailed mapping of ethanol availability across key producing states, including analysis of installed capacities, existing OMC offtake commitments, surplus availability, supplier behaviour, pricing dynamics, and long-term procurement feasibility.

Hydrogen Sourcing Strategy: Evaluation of grey, blue, and green hydrogen options across North India, including assessment of cost competitiveness, supply maturity, carbon intensity, and impact on SAF lifecycle emissions.

Techno-Economic Assessment: Identification of key cost drivers, benchmarking of variable production costs under different feedstock and hydrogen scenarios, and high-level CAPEX estimation to determine overall project competitiveness.

Location Optimization & Policy Analysis: Multi-criteria evaluation of potential project locations based on feedstock availability, proximity to aviation fuel demand centres, hydrogen supply infrastructure, logistics advantages, and availability of state-level incentives, subsidies, and policy support.

Strategic Roadmap Development: Preparation of a phased roadmap covering project development, investment readiness, and future scale-up opportunities within India's emerging SAF ecosystem.
